The Three Peaks of Yorkshire
Whernside (728m)

_____________________

This page details the suggested route from Ribblehead to the Hill Inn (near Chapel-le-Dale) on the B6255, via Whernside. This section is approximately 12 kms long, and involves a steep climb up Whernside, but mostly paths and tracks are well defined and easy underfoot.

Route

At Ribblehead, turn left onto the B6255 for a short distance. Cross the road, and just after the Inn (GR 764 791) follow the path up the eastern side of the viaduct, without passing underneath it. Continue north on the track, which is alongside the Settle to Carlisle railway. Pass Blea Moor sidings and signal box (GR 758 806). The path crosses the railway and although obvious on the ground, it does not follow the right of way as marked on maps. Meet a stone wall and climb, steeply at first, along the ridge for about a mile to the summit of Whernside (GR 738 814).

Continue along the ridge for about 1km then bear left on the well defined footpath (GR 735 802). This path turns to track leading to Bruntscar. From the farm buildings, a road will now lead you to the B6255. Turn left to the Hill Inn (GR 743 776).
