Most youth groups will require a completed route card to be produced for any walking expedition. Creating a route card will help you become familiar with the paths and mountains before you venture into them, and you should also note a number of safe exit routes incase of accidents, injury, or foul weather. Good pre-planning is essential. The Mountaineering Council of Scotland has produced an information sheet regarding the pro's and con's of leaving a Route Card with a responsible person who is not taking part in your walk.
