Welcome to our Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge website. _____________________ The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is a walking challenge route with the circuit normally starting and ending at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, visiting the three highest peaks in Yorkshire - Pen-y-ghent (691m), Whernside (728m), and Ingleborough (723m) - in that order. The total distance walked is around 25 miles, with the aim of completing in less than 12 hours, but of course, you can enjoy a more relaxed pace if you wish. This is a long and demanding walk, with a total climb of some 5,200 feet and good navigational skills may be required on some sections in poor visibilty. The peaks themselves can be pretty hostile in poor weather, and ideally walkers should have an average to good standard of fitness and stamina, and most certainly suitable mountain equipment and some outdoors experience before attempting the challenge. Any party leader should have enough experience to spot mountain exposure (hypothermia) and exhaustion amongst the group, and know when to turn back rather than push on to the top.. You should know what to do in the event of an emergency, and if unsure of your ability seek professional guidence before starting. |
General Information _____________________ The Yorkshire 3 Peaks makes an ideal route first for those who wish to start tackling challenge and long distance routes. Ribblehead and Chapel-Le-Dale both have public houses, where you can get hot food and drinks, or even order a taxi home if injured or you wish to retire. You are never very far from a road, whilst still feeling remote. This is the ideal challenge to make a great weekend of - arrive Friday, stay in a B&B or camp, tackle the peaks from early Saturday morning, then enjoy a few pints afterwards before returning to B&B or tent, travel home Sunday. |
