Driving Route & Support Information

The original 'Driving' information page has been moved and is
located here. However, due to the constant roadworks, traffic diversions, updates and alterations, we now have moved information onto the forum which is updated weekly during the summer months. We also have route and satnav information in .pdf format which can easily be printed off. Please direct any questions to the forum, rather than email.

Your ideal route choice will depend upon the size and type of vehicle, day and time of start of your challenge, challenge direction, and choice of Wasdale or Seathwaite for Scafell Pike. Access to Wasdale Head is very narrow, and is totally unsuitable for coaches.

On an average challenge, you can expect to be driving some 450 miles over 10 or 11 hours including some comfort/fuel stops, and there are many police safety cameras on the route - so do not be tempted to make up lost time by speeding. You will also need to drive to the start of the challenge, and drive home afterwards.

With years of Three Peaks Challenge experience, please accept our following safety advice for an enjoyable challenge:

1. DO NOT try to drive and walk. Get at least one, preferably two, dedicated drivers who will not be climbing the mountains. NEWS

2. Take a 20 minute break between Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike. This should be used to sort kit, freshen up, get fuel, get hot food/drinks.

3. Sort food and drinks for both walkers and drivers. Allow drivers to get plentry of rest/sleep whilst you are walking the mountains.

4. Get up-to-date route information via our forum..!

Remember that after each mountain you will need to get changed, have a hot or cold drink, and get some food. If you have a dedicated driver or two, they can act as your support team and prepare some hot food and drinks for you. Let them know when you are about to return, using mobile phones or VHF radios if possible.

We are able to arrange complete fundraising, team-building and challenge events for charities and corporate organisations. Please email your requirements. Our clients include BMW, C4, Shell UK, Barclays, Motorola, Qioptiq, Tates, Aldi, BBC, etc., - and we have been recommended in the Mail On Sunday (23.07.06)..!

See our BMW Challenge online here..!

We have years of experience providing for the transport needs of Three Peaks climbers and teams, from small groups of 2-3 climbers, up to large scale events with 10 teams of 8. Our basic transport service includes collection from Glasgow Airport, transfer to Fort William to start the Challenge, travel to either Wasdale or Seathwaite for Scafell Pike, then on to Pen-y-Pass for your climb of Snowdon. Final drop-off can be at Llandudno Junction railway station, or a local B&B for a well earned rest.

We are also able to collect/drop off in and around London - but you should be aware that transfer from London to Fort William may take up to 12 hours, and return from Llanberis to London is around 6 hours. Both journeys will require a change of driver in the north-west.

The replacement Bongo Bus..!
8 luxury leather recliners, air conditioned or heated, reading lights, etc
Ford Tourneo Minibus: 9 seats (including driver), 2 litre turbo diesel engine, comfortable passenger seats and plenty of legroom. Large boot area for luggage. This popular vehicle makes a comfy choice for up to 5 passengers and has been in Three Peaks service from mid 2006 (replacing the famous and well loved 'Bongo Bus') - see images above.

LDV 17 Minibus: 17 seats (including driver). 2.4 litre diesel engine, and like all LDV's - hates the big hills..! But you will be asleep then... A solid, reliable workhorse very popular with bigger groups, but no luxuries here. No separate luggage capacity, so limited to a maximum of 10 walkers. Recommend only 8 walkers for maximum space and comfort in the LDV.

Luxury Bongo Bus: To start service in 2008. A coach-built tourer, with 8 leather, reclining, air conditioned passenger seats, tables, large tinted panoramic windows, reading lights, rear space heater, huge boot space, air suspension, overhead storage, etc. Currently being fitted with 12v/240v outlets, entertainment, and if we can organise it - hot water.
