Driving Route & Support Information It's important to understand that your drivers face their own 3 Peaks Challenge transporting the climbers safely to the right location in good time. Many people who have walked the challenge one year, then driven the next, have stated that both are equally difficult and demanding. The original 'Driving' information page has been moved and is located here. However, due to the constant roadworks, traffic diversions, updates and alterations, we now have moved information onto the forum which is updated weekly during the summer months. We also have route and satnav information in .pdf format which can easily be printed off. Please direct any questions to the forum, rather than email. Your ideal route choice will depend upon the size and type of vehicle, day and time of start of your challenge, challenge direction, and choice of Wasdale or Seathwaite for Scafell Pike. Access to Wasdale Head is very narrow, and is totally unsuitable for coaches. On an average challenge, you can expect to be driving some 450 miles over 10 or 11 hours including some comfort/fuel stops, and there are many police safety cameras on the route - so do not be tempted to make up lost time by speeding. You will also need to drive to the start of the challenge, and drive home afterwards. 3 PEAKS DRIVING - TOP 10 TIPS With years of Three Peaks Challenge experience, please accept our following safety advice for an enjoyable challenge: 1. DO NOT try to drive and walk. Get at least one, preferably two, dedicated drivers who will not be climbing
the mountains. NEWS Most organised events will require two drivers as a condition of entry. If you end
up driving and walking, and are involved in a crash, you may well be prosecuted
for a variety of driving offences (it does happen)! 2. Take a 20 minute break between Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike. This should be used to sort kit, freshen up, get fuel, get hot food/drinks. Gretna Services on the M74 is ideal. Forgetting to fuel up here can lead to disaster later on, especially if time is getting short. 3. Sort food and drinks for both walkers and drivers. Taking some simple cooking equipment and a few hot water flasks will help keep everyone fed and watered. Don't simply rely on catering outlets (McDonalds, chip shop, 24 hour motorway services) as they are not always serving food! 4. Get the right size of vehicle for your group. You should leave plenty of space to relax and spread out, store your kit and food supplies. As a rough guide, unless you have lots of stowage space, try to leave a third of seats empty ie,. 15 seat minibus = 10 passengers maximum. 5. Check driver insurance and licence entitlement, especially if hiring a vehicle. Minibus drivers must have D1 catagory and are normally required to be over 25 and under 70 for insurance purposes. |
6. Don't speed to save time..! There are a number of fixed position safety traffic
cameras on the suggested driving route, and regular speed traps on the M6 Cumbria
and M74 Scotland. Unmarked police cars and motorcycles patrol the A82, and north
Wales police have frequent speed and safety campaigns on the A55 Coastal Road.
You are warned..! 7. Be flexible with your route. During a 450 mile journey you are bound to encounter some delays, slow moving vehicles, or roadworks which were not predicted. Matrix signs are in operation on the main routes which give early warning of accidents, delays, or road diversions. 8. Use a Satnav AND road map. The satnav gives a good estimated time of arrival at your next mountain, and can be a great help getting back on track if you take the odd wrong turn or two. The road map is the best way to decide upon alternative routes to avoid delays. 9. Check the internet and the forum for up-to-date information regarding any roadworks or road closures. The driving route has three sets of long-term ongoing roadworks (as at November 2009). 10. When approaching each mountain, take care as roads are narrow, beware of sheep on the roads, slow over cattle grids and over hump backed bridges, dip headlamps when near farms, cottages, and campsites, park considerately in authorised areas - don't block access. |

Transport News Update 2009 On January 1st 2008, a number of important new rules for minibuses (any vehicle with
over 8 passenger seats) came into force in the UK. All new minibuses after this date are now restricted to 100 kph (62 mph). Some older minibuses are now also restricted. Most rental companies have now restricted their entire fleets to 100 kph. 'Hire & Reward' minibus operators (such as ourselves) are now required to install tachographs, and observe strict driver hours rules. With a maximum working time limit of 15 hours in any one day (before an 8 hour rest period) we can only offer the 16 passenger minibus with two drivers, or a change of driver in the north-west. It has become much more expensive, and much slower, to complete the Three Peaks Challenge in any vehicle with over 8 passenger seats. As such - we have now drawn up the following transport services: |
Service Menu 2009 Transport Only We now have various passenger vehicles available. These range in size and age, and we highly recommend that for each vehicle a maximum of passengers for passenger comfort is observed. For larger groups of up to 12 passengers, we can provide larger minibuses with much more luggage space - please see transport menu below: Car: 3 passengers maximum. Cars range from BMW Touring to Mercedes. Not much extra space for kit, but fast and comfortable. Up to 6 walkers: Small minibus. Minibuses range from Ford Tourneo to Mercedes Vito. Comfortable and compact. 6 passengers. Up to 8 walkers: Large minibus. Minibuses rage from Fiat Duccato to LDV Convoy. Plenty of room for walkers and kit. 8 passengers. Up to 12 walkers: 15/17 seat VOSA registered minibus. Restricted to 62mph, and may require two drivers for a 24 hour challenge depending upon challenge format. However, ideal for challenges over longer periods for larger groups. 12 passengers maximum. Larger Groups: We recommend that for safety and comfort, groups travel as smaller self-contained teams. However, if you are planning a large event, we can organise coach travel between each peak. Please contact us for further information, as this requires certain planning and logistics considerations not required for smaller vehicles/groups. All above options are based upon a standard 24 hour challenge, collect at Glasgow Intl Airport (GLA) Friday evening, overnight stop at Fort William, start challenge Saturday, end Sunday afternoon and drop-off north Wales. Other collection/drop-off points are available by arrangement, with Liverpool and Chester being popular transfer points. Qualified Mountain Leader (with above transport) We are a Public Service Vehicle Operator licensed by VOSA Please email your planned itinerary for a quote. |
Target Drive Times Glen Nevis > Seathwaite = 5.5 hours Glen Nevis > Wasdale = 6 hours Seathwaite > Llanberis = 4.5 hours Wasdale > Llanberis = 5 hours Times based on minibus restricted to 62 mph, including 20 minute break on M74. |
