On a relatively warm and dry weekend, seven teams of challenge walkers managed to
assemble at the Alexandra Hotel in Fort William to register for Event 1 : Spring
Stroller. After a 45 minute safety briefing in the morning, teams started at
10 minute intervals from Glen Nevis. Despite the clear weather, snow on the Ben Nevis summit was still deep, and many cornices added some danger to the route. However, visibility remained good, and apart from strong gusts, no real problems were encountered. The quickest group (The Flabs) made the summit and returned to the car park at the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre in a cracking 3 hours 15 minutes. Perhaps this easy trek on the Mountain Track lulled some teams into a false sense of security... After an enforced minimum 6 hour drive to Wasdale, teams encounter seriously poor weather conditions, which continued to worsen. At some stages, visibility was down to less than 5 metres. Wind and rain were hitting hard, and the going was very slow, with nearly all teams finding navigation extremely challenging, even with some glowing waypoints laid out at the more confusing track and path junctions. Eventually all teams safely exited the mountain, cold and wet, but not beaten. A typical five hours later, they arrived at Pen-Y-Pass in Snowdonia to climb the final peak - Snowdon. |
Event Finish. Your timed event will finish at the summit of Snowdon. However, you will still need to descend the Llanberis Path to meet up with your support team in the Royal Victoria Hotel car park, Llanberis. From here, you will need to drive some 8 miles to the Hotel Plas Dinorwic where there will be a reception buffet, and a relaxed, informal prize giving where you can receive your challenge medals and certificates. You can also collect an instant print-out of your challenge times to take home with you. Those wishing to stay overnight on Sunday should book rooms directly with the hotel (about £38 per person).
